Prom Shoes to Last the Night

You Have Your Prom Dress….Now Your Shoes

What’s the point in wearing a gorgeous prom dress only to have to spend the entire night sitting down because you chose the wrong pair of shoes? The fact is, many people spend hours (scratch that, weeks) looking for the perfect prom dress and then completely phone it in when picking out shoes. If you want your night to be a night to remember (in a good way), you’ll want to follow these simple rules when narrowing down your prom shoe choice:

1.) Choose the right color. The right color is essential, and no, black does not go with everything. If you are wearing a pastel colored dress, choose a shoe in an equally mellow color. If you’re wearing a bold dress (like a shimmering silver gown), a bold pop of color, like a bright turquoise, would be a smart choice. The colors don’t have to match, but they should complement each other.

2.) Choose the right shape. Clunky platforms have no business with a delicate, flowing gown. Don’t just pair up whatever you have lying around with your dress, really think about what would go together. A delicate dress often calls for a delicate shoe. A simple, classic-cut dress might be complemented well with a more detailed and ornate shoe. And don’t forget about boots and flats! Tall, knee high boots might pair well with a shorter dress, and a pair of flat ballet style shoes would look absolutely perfect with a vintage cut mini dress.

3) Choose the right size. It may seem like common sense, but it’s impossible to count the number of girls across the country right now at their friends’ houses trying on a pair of shoes they want to “borrow” that are just half a size too small. Wearing shoes that are the wrong size will ruin your evening faster than you can imagine! If you have no friends that wear the exact same size as you (half sizes do matter), then go out and buy a pair. They don’t have to be super expensive, but they do have to fit.

4.) Choose something that you can walk in. A 6-inch stiletto may look amazing with your sleek and trim gown, but if the most you can manage is to walk two feet from one chair to another all night there’s really no point in even going. If you’re dead set on a high heel, aim for something with a bit of a platform near the toe (this lessens the overall angle your foot will be at all night and provides a bit of extra padding). Also, practice, practice, practice; spend a few days walking around in your new heels before the big day. You want to feel confident walking into prom, not clumsy and awkward.

4 Essential Bridesmaid Dress Tips

Essential Bridesmaid Dress Tips-Wedding Gowns,Prom,Maryland,Plus Size

There is a lot that goes into choosing a bridesmaid dress for your wedding; you don’t simply pick the first thing off the rack and apply it to the five girls that will be standing alongside you on your wedding day. Something that would look darling on you might look incredibly unflattering on your friends, and something that you think anyone could afford might be a whole month’s rent to another pal. However, as much thought that goes into choosing your bridesmaid dresses, you should be good as long as you keep these four tips in mind you should be good to go:

1.) The price is right. You might even want to ask ahead of time before deciding on a price range. Of course this is your wedding, but if none of your bridesmaids can afford the dress, they might have to bow out of being your bridesmaids, and isn’t who is standing up there with you more important than what they’re wearing?

2.) If the dresses suit the wedding theme. Formal weddings need formal bridesmaid dresses while casual countryside weddings can get away with casual bridesmaid sundresses. There are countless bridesmaid dresses available to you, but don’t go choosing one until you have an idea of what kind of wedding you’ll be throwing. Many brides make the mistake of buying a wedding dress and then deciding on other factors later. Then they realize the whimsical, breezy dress they fell in love with isn’t going to be appropriate for the formal church wedding they’re planning. With how difficult it is to find a new wedding dress, can you imagine how difficult it would be to find five new bridesmaid dresses?

3.) Comfort is key. Nothing spoils a good time faster than wearing something uncomfortable. Whether it’s shoes that are too high, a dress that is constantly riding up or undergarments that pinch in all the wrong places, it’s pretty tough to have a good time when you’re in constant discomfort, so aim to find dresses that all your girls can dance the night away in without feeling self-conscious.

This also includes considering which undergarments they’ll have to wear. Strapless dresses can be difficult for busty girls to wear all night. Even with a good bra, they’re likely to be pulling and tugging to make sure everything is in place. If you have a couple girls in your ensemble that are, shall we say, a bit “top heavy’, consider choosing dresses that have straps or some kind of built-in support.

4.) Keep it appropriate. That gorgeous mini-dress might look absolutely adorable on your 5’2” frame, but on your 5’11” Maid of Honor it could look downright scandalous. If you fall in love with a specific dress though, consider getting the long version and then leaving it up to the girls to hem it to a shorter length that would be appropriate to their height.

Summer Wedding Hair Tips

Summer Wedding Hair Tips

Summer is quickly creeping up and that means plenty of summer wedding hair dilemmas. Many brides this time of year make the mistake of choosing their hairstyle while they’re in the salon; they pick out something that’s absolutely gorgeous that fits their theme and compliments their features, only to have it all fall apart on the day of their wedding. Wind, humidity and high heat can all cause chaos on a perfectly planned updo. So this summer, whether you are getting married or are simply attending a wedding, here are a few tips to ensure your hair will be the least of your problems:

1.) Fight sun damage. You probably remember to apply sunscreen to your skin, but what about your hair? UV rays are just as damaging to your hair as they are to your skin, leaving your hair dry, brittle and dull. Plus, if you’re planning on wearing your hair that leaves a part somewhere, you’re going to want to make sure you have sunscreen on that area of your scalp. Various leave-in conditioners and hairsprays now have SPF (or HPF), so choose wisely.

2.) Fight humidity. No one wants frizz and fly-aways on their wedding day, so be ready to counteract any unsuspecting humidity. The best thing to do in this case is to work with your hair, not against it. A leave-in conditioner may once again prove useful, while a smoothing serum will help with those out of control fly-aways. Less is more though; too much will make your hair appear greasy and limp. A light touch with the styling products will keep your look fresh.

3.) Consider your hair length. Long hair and short hair often need entirely different styling products and techniques. A haircut might also be in order if you want to look your absolute best. Long, flowing curls might look better with some longer layers added throughout and an already short do might look absolutely darling if you were to have an sophisticated pixie cut. Of course, you should always consult an experienced hair stylist before trying anything drastic.

4.) Trust your stylist. Hair stylists have seen it all, so they do know what they’re talking about. If you have issues with a specific style you should absolutely voice your opinions, but you should also trust that your stylist knows what they’re doing. Plus, if they suggest a specific product or style, you have every right to give it a test run. Use the products they will use on your wedding day a month or two before to see how your hair reacts.

5.)  Don’t forget the accessories! Part of the fun in wedding hair is the accessories! There are veils, flowers, brooches, hair clips and many other things to play around and have fun with. Whatever style you’re going for, there is most likely a perfect accessory to go along with it. Of course a natural look is perfect as well, but you’ll want to know all your options before making a decision!

5 Things to Do Immediately After Getting Engaged

5 Things to Do Immediately After Getting Engaged – Now A Wedding!

One of you asked and the other said yes: congratulations! Now a WEDDING!!!!These next few weeks are probably going to be some of the happiest times in your entire life, so it’s completely understandable if your mind checks out of a few things. How are you supposed to focus at work when people are stopping by your cubicle for a quick proposal story? How are you supposed to do anything with your new shiny ring staring right at you? Which reminds us, you might want to take a day or two off from driving…

Of course there are also a few important things you need to take care of, and lucky for you we have already made a list:

1.) Tell those closest to you. It might be your first instinct to shout the good news from the highest mountaintop you can find (aka: Facebook), but your closest friends and family deserve better than that. These are the people that love you most, so deserve to find out from you in person, not over a computer screen. Besides, announcing it on Facebook before you’ve told your inner circle will rob you of seeing their faces the first time they hear the news.

2.) Insure your ring. The immediate weeks after you get engaged are some of the riskiest times for your new ring. People will not only want to see it, but they’ll want you to take it off so they can see it up close (and even try it on, as some of your closest girlfriends will probably do). So make sure you insure it right after the proposal.

3.) Lay off the wedding logistics. Wedding planning is stressful, and there’s plenty of time to lose sleep over the guest list and the price of the venue. So kick back and relax, this is a truly unique time in your life and you should enjoy the feeling of just being engaged!

4.) But feel free to fantasize. However, we know that wedding planning is also part of the fun, so by all means collect inspiration! Invite your girlfriends over for a night of drinking wine while flipping through bridal magazines. Stay up late with your fiancé laughing about the idea of the two of you using a penguin as your ring bearer. Have fun with it!

5.) Throw a party! Not an engagement party (that takes planning and comes later), just a celebratory “We’re engaged!” party. Invite everyone over for a backyard BBQ or have everyone to get dressed up and meet you at your favorite restaurant. Be prepared to show off your ring and tell the proposal story over and over again (trust us, at this point, it just gets better every time). And once again, congratulations!

Wedding Day Summer Hair Tips

Wedding Day Summer Hair - Wedding Dresses, Plus Size, Prom, Maryland

Chances are, you’ve probably had an idea of what you want your hair to look like on your wedding day for some time now. You probably have a decent Pinterest board of various cuts and style that you’re considering incorporating somehow. Of course all of these styles will look amazing on you in the salon chair, but as soon as you need to test them out by dancing in a hot and humid environment, everything could very well fall apart. Your hair stylist should be able to take care of that for their wedding day (after all, that is what they do for a living), but we’ve got a few other things you might want to consider if you want to make their job as easy as possible.

1.) Don’t forget the hair protection factor. Sure everyone knows to put sunscreen on their skin, but what about their hair? Your hair and scalp is just as susceptible to UV damage as the rest of your body. Fortunately, it’s the 21st century, which means there are plenty of products on the market that can alleviate this issue. Just choose your favorite spray-on product or leave-in condition that comes with a little extra UV protection power.

2.) Understand how humidity works. You can’t make your hair immune to the effects of humidity, but with the right products a little humidity can actually help your style. Using smoothing conditions and serums will work with the moisture in the air to help seal the cuticle and tame fly-aways. This is definitely an occasion where you want as little product in your hair as possible; otherwise your style will end up looking limp and maybe even greasy.

3.) Have the right haircut. As we all know, a decent haircut can make a world of differences in the way a person looks and feels. So getting a quick trim before your wedding day is of course recommended to make sure your style looks as fresh as possible. However, doing something drastic like going from long hair to a pixie-cut might be something to save until after your big day. You might love it, but then again you might hate it, and now you’ll have hundreds of pictures reminding you of that haircut you despised. Work with a stylist and save the experimental cuts for the honeymoon or later.

4.) Choose the right accessories. There are so many accessories to choose from, it’s a wonder you can even narrow it down to one. Work with a stylist so choose a hairstyle and a perfectly complimenting hair accessory. Perhaps you want something soft and romantic, like long flowing locks with a sweet flower, or something elegant and sophisticated like a one-of-a-kind tiara atop an intricate updo. Either way, you should be able to choose something amazing to make your hair look the best it’s ever been for your wedding day.
