Weddings are not all about the dress. They have so many traditions, and I love learning how they began and evolved into what they are today. One that really piqued my interest lately was the Bride’s bouquet toss. Where did this tradition come from?

Let’s travel back to the 14th century when the original tradition began. The bride has always been thought to be a lucky woman. So it was common for wedding guests actually to grab and rip shreds of the bride’s gown. Yes, you read that correctly. You would have guests grabbing and ripping pieces of your gown for good luck.

As time passed, Bride needed to find a way to change this tradition. Basically, she is creating a new tactic to avoid destroying her wedding gown. So the tossing of the bouquet became the new tradition. The bride would toss her bouquet into the crowd to distract her guest so she could leave with her husband to the bridal chamber.

So now all the single ladies line up on the dance floor for the chance to catch the bride’s bouquet. Whoever catches the bouquet is the next to get married! They are receiving all the luck from the bride. The tossing of the bride’s bouquet allows everyone to be around the bride and her beautiful wedding gown instead of ripping her wedding gown to shreds. Something I am sure every Bride is thankful for. A bride spends a lot of time getting ready for her special day. No one better shred up their wedding gown!!
