Wedding Gown Alterations
You ordered your wedding gown or purchased your wedding gown from inventory and now it is time for wedding gown alterations. Are wedding gown alterations always needed? Where do I go for alterations? How long does it take for your wedding gown alterations? How much will it cost me? – These are the common questions we receive when we work our brides. So let’s answer those questions for you.
Are wedding gown alterations always needed?
In a simple answer YES! Wedding gowns are not produced to your exact measurements. So you will normally need some type of alteration. So there is no need to be concerned if your dress needs a hem or shaping in a certain area.
Where do I go for wedding gown alterations?
At Lily’s Bridal and Prom Boutique we provide our brides with a list of recommended seamstresses all over Maryland. We do this for several reasons. The main one is convenience for the bride. This way you have a seamstress that offers hours that fits your schedule and location. The second reason is we do not like to have a seamstress meet you at the store and then take your wedding gown with them to sew offsite. To us this leaves room for your dress being damaged. To Lily’s it is safer and so much more convenient for you to have a seamstress that meets you and sews your wedding gown all at the same place. This does not mean we do not know about alterations. I am what you call a dress engineer. I know dresses are put together and sewn.
How many appointments will be needed for my wedding gown alterations?
Typically you will meet with your seamstress three times. Your first appointment is to determine what needs to be done and discuss pricing. Please make sure you get what will be done and the cost in writing. This will protect you and the seamstress. Keeps everyone on the same page. Your second appointment will be about tweaking and more shaping. The 3rd appointment will be final fitting and pick up. You may require additional appointments if you are having changes outside the normal alterations to your wedding gown.
How much are wedding gown alterations?
This is an area that has a large price range due to so many factors. The dress material, the dress layers, lace, beading, and so on. Our industry standard price range is $300 – $600. This is where we strongly recommend discussing price at your first appointment. You can always shop around for pricing but please research the seamstress and read their reviews.
When should I book an appointment for my wedding gown alterations?
Lily’s Bridal strongly recommend three months prior to your wedding date. Book that appointment as soon as you can. Remember there are other clients for your seamstress. Not to mention the peak wedding season too. The spring and fall are busy times for most seamstresses. So plan ahead!
Wedding and a Bridezilla
Bridezillas can be one of the most difficult obstacles for a person to overcome when planning a wedding. Here is a person that is under such an intense level of stress that they start taking it out on their friends and family members. If you’re going to survive the next few months with this woman, you’re going to have to follow a few of the tips we’ve lined up for you below:
1.) Realize who you’re dealing with. Everyone gets stressed about something, and chances are you know the bride so well that you know what she’s stressing over. So help her calm some of her stress. If she thinks there’s absolutely no way she’s going to be able to stuff 368 envelopes full of wedding invitations, get on the phone and get a small collection of people over at her house to do the job.
2.) Really give everything a legitimate try. Even if you think it’s crazy, at least try. Of course there are just some things you won’t be able to do, like travel to Rome for the wedding dress fittings. In these cases give a strict, non-negotiable “No”. For other things though, go ahead and try and indulge her. Baking 400 cookies for the rehearsal dinner sounds pretty impossible, so bake as many as you can and then stop by the store the next day to make up the difference. She’ll see how much of an effort you put in as well as possibly realize that her original demands were pretty impossible to begin with.
3.) Treat her like a princess. Sound tough? Of course it is, but she’s planning her wedding day. In her head, nothing is more important than this wedding, so treating her like the important person she feels she is right now will actually help you both to get on the same page. Don’t worry, as soon as she’s married the urgency will go away and everyone will be more relaxed.
4.) Seek out close friends. If you do have some issues going on in your own life, contact your friends and vent with them instead. You’ll be able to clear your head all while they’re intently listening and not worrying about what exactly you are doing.
5.) Stay positive. It’s perfectly natural to want to talk about the bride behind her back. If she’s bossing you around like crazy, of course you’re going to be bitter. However, you have to remember that she is not herself right now. All of the crazy demands and even insults that she hurls your way are not what her personality is made of. You’ll have your friend back as soon as the wedding is over, so keep the negative talk to yourself for just a few more months, at least.
Finding the right wedding dress is actually a lot like finding the person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with. You’ll do some searching, you’ll question whether or not it’s worth the investment and you might even have second guesses about taking the leap. Thankfully though, we’ve compiled a list of ways to know when you can put down that bridal magazine and put down a deposit; here’s how you know you’ve found your dream dress.
1.) You can afford it. No matter what dress you think you might need, if you can’t afford it, it’s the wrong dress. There’s no use putting yourself in debt for the rest of your life for one night in a beautiful garment. Think about it; it’s going to be pretty tough explaining to your kids that only one of them gets to go to college because Mom “just had to have 10,000 hand placed crystals.”
2.) It matches your personality. Your dress should be a perfect reflection of who you are. If you’re a free-spirited bohemian bride, you probably aren’t going to be very comfortable in something very structured or architectural. Likewise, if you’re a funky, high fashion bride, you should hold out for something with a unique cut or embellishment. You should feel 100% like yourself in whatever you choose.
3.) It makes you feel like a million bucks. This is your day to feel absolutely amazing! You’ll know you’ve found “the one” because it will make you feel like a goddess the second you slip it on. Things you’ve been self-conscious about will melt away and beautiful curves you may have never even noticed will be perfectly accentuated.
4.) You know your fiancé will love it. Your wedding dress is your choice alone; it really doesn’t matter what your fiancé thinks of it. However, your fiancé will still love it. Not because he has a specific taste in wedding dresses, but because the right dress will be a perfect reflection of yourself, along with all the little reasons your fiancé fell in love with you in the first place. If you can imagine the look on his or her face as you walk down the aisle, you’ve probably found “the one”.
5.) You get “the feeling”. “The feeling” refers to that same feeling you get when you know you’ve found the right person. You know this is it; you have no other reason to keep searching for your dress. As soon as you get “the feeling” trust it. Doubting yourself will only create confusion. If the dress fits, is a true reflection of yourself and is in your price range, you’ve probably got it made.
It is wedding season. The overwhelming majority of couples choose to get married in the warmer months for a variety of reasons; it’s easier for family members to travel, it’s far enough from the holiday season everyone has some money and vacation days saved up and, of course, there’s a better chance of having an outdoor wedding. However, if you aren’t prepared, your outdoor wedding can turn into a disaster in the making, so here are a few tips to help ensure things run smoothly:
1.) Obtain the necessary permits. It might not seem like such a big deal, but if you don’t have all the required permits on your wedding day, you could be looking at some serious fines, and we can bet you’ll already be over-budget as it is. Virtually any public land or site (public parks, wildlife preserves and historical landmarks, just to name a few) requires a permit to not only use the land but also gather a large number of people.
2.) Have a backup plan for the weather. No matter how stable the weather seems to be, there is always a higher chance of inclement weather on your wedding day (according to Murphy’s Law, that is), so you’re going to need a solid backup plan. You’ll have to make sure your backup plan has many of the same features as your original wedding site, like the ability to contain 250 people without creating an overcrowded fire hazard.
3.) Be safe. There are plenty of things that could go wrong at an outdoor wedding, so it’s best that you cover your bases. That means leaving the candles at home and using enclosed lanterns instead. Wear plenty of sunscreen and use common sense; you don’t want to be having a BBQ in the middle of a bear preserve.
4.) Think about your guests. Many brides have no idea how hot it is sitting in those chairs in direct sunlight because they’re not in direct sunlight; they’re under a shaded arbor. If it’s going to be 100 degrees outside, make sure your guests are sitting in a shaded area, have plenty of water and have something to fan themselves with.
5.) Don’t forget about the restrooms! No one wants to think about restrooms on their big day, but trust me, you need to. If there’s a business nearby you’ll have to check with them first before telling your guests to use their facilities, and if you’re out in the middle of nowhere you’re going to need to bring in some porta-potties to keep everyone comfortable.

There is a lot that goes into choosing a bridesmaid dress for your wedding; you don’t simply pick the first thing off the rack and apply it to the five girls that will be standing alongside you on your wedding day. Something that would look darling on you might look incredibly unflattering on your friends, and something that you think anyone could afford might be a whole month’s rent to another pal. However, as much thought that goes into choosing your bridesmaid dresses, you should be good as long as you keep these four tips in mind you should be good to go:
1.) The price is right. You might even want to ask ahead of time before deciding on a price range. Of course this is your wedding, but if none of your bridesmaids can afford the dress, they might have to bow out of being your bridesmaids, and isn’t who is standing up there with you more important than what they’re wearing?
2.) If the dresses suit the wedding theme. Formal weddings need formal bridesmaid dresses while casual countryside weddings can get away with casual bridesmaid sundresses. There are countless bridesmaid dresses available to you, but don’t go choosing one until you have an idea of what kind of wedding you’ll be throwing. Many brides make the mistake of buying a wedding dress and then deciding on other factors later. Then they realize the whimsical, breezy dress they fell in love with isn’t going to be appropriate for the formal church wedding they’re planning. With how difficult it is to find a new wedding dress, can you imagine how difficult it would be to find five new bridesmaid dresses?
3.) Comfort is key. Nothing spoils a good time faster than wearing something uncomfortable. Whether it’s shoes that are too high, a dress that is constantly riding up or undergarments that pinch in all the wrong places, it’s pretty tough to have a good time when you’re in constant discomfort, so aim to find dresses that all your girls can dance the night away in without feeling self-conscious.
This also includes considering which undergarments they’ll have to wear. Strapless dresses can be difficult for busty girls to wear all night. Even with a good bra, they’re likely to be pulling and tugging to make sure everything is in place. If you have a couple girls in your ensemble that are, shall we say, a bit “top heavy’, consider choosing dresses that have straps or some kind of built-in support.
4.) Keep it appropriate. That gorgeous mini-dress might look absolutely adorable on your 5’2” frame, but on your 5’11” Maid of Honor it could look downright scandalous. If you fall in love with a specific dress though, consider getting the long version and then leaving it up to the girls to hem it to a shorter length that would be appropriate to their height.

Summer Wedding Hair Tips
Summer is quickly creeping up and that means plenty of summer wedding hair dilemmas. Many brides this time of year make the mistake of choosing their hairstyle while they’re in the salon; they pick out something that’s absolutely gorgeous that fits their theme and compliments their features, only to have it all fall apart on the day of their wedding. Wind, humidity and high heat can all cause chaos on a perfectly planned updo. So this summer, whether you are getting married or are simply attending a wedding, here are a few tips to ensure your hair will be the least of your problems:
1.) Fight sun damage. You probably remember to apply sunscreen to your skin, but what about your hair? UV rays are just as damaging to your hair as they are to your skin, leaving your hair dry, brittle and dull. Plus, if you’re planning on wearing your hair that leaves a part somewhere, you’re going to want to make sure you have sunscreen on that area of your scalp. Various leave-in conditioners and hairsprays now have SPF (or HPF), so choose wisely.
2.) Fight humidity. No one wants frizz and fly-aways on their wedding day, so be ready to counteract any unsuspecting humidity. The best thing to do in this case is to work with your hair, not against it. A leave-in conditioner may once again prove useful, while a smoothing serum will help with those out of control fly-aways. Less is more though; too much will make your hair appear greasy and limp. A light touch with the styling products will keep your look fresh.
3.) Consider your hair length. Long hair and short hair often need entirely different styling products and techniques. A haircut might also be in order if you want to look your absolute best. Long, flowing curls might look better with some longer layers added throughout and an already short do might look absolutely darling if you were to have an sophisticated pixie cut. Of course, you should always consult an experienced hair stylist before trying anything drastic.
4.) Trust your stylist. Hair stylists have seen it all, so they do know what they’re talking about. If you have issues with a specific style you should absolutely voice your opinions, but you should also trust that your stylist knows what they’re doing. Plus, if they suggest a specific product or style, you have every right to give it a test run. Use the products they will use on your wedding day a month or two before to see how your hair reacts.
5.) Don’t forget the accessories! Part of the fun in wedding hair is the accessories! There are veils, flowers, brooches, hair clips and many other things to play around and have fun with. Whatever style you’re going for, there is most likely a perfect accessory to go along with it. Of course a natural look is perfect as well, but you’ll want to know all your options before making a decision!

5 Things to Do Immediately After Getting Engaged – Now A Wedding!
One of you asked and the other said yes: congratulations! Now a WEDDING!!!!These next few weeks are probably going to be some of the happiest times in your entire life, so it’s completely understandable if your mind checks out of a few things. How are you supposed to focus at work when people are stopping by your cubicle for a quick proposal story? How are you supposed to do anything with your new shiny ring staring right at you? Which reminds us, you might want to take a day or two off from driving…
Of course there are also a few important things you need to take care of, and lucky for you we have already made a list:
1.) Tell those closest to you. It might be your first instinct to shout the good news from the highest mountaintop you can find (aka: Facebook), but your closest friends and family deserve better than that. These are the people that love you most, so deserve to find out from you in person, not over a computer screen. Besides, announcing it on Facebook before you’ve told your inner circle will rob you of seeing their faces the first time they hear the news.
2.) Insure your ring. The immediate weeks after you get engaged are some of the riskiest times for your new ring. People will not only want to see it, but they’ll want you to take it off so they can see it up close (and even try it on, as some of your closest girlfriends will probably do). So make sure you insure it right after the proposal.
3.) Lay off the wedding logistics. Wedding planning is stressful, and there’s plenty of time to lose sleep over the guest list and the price of the venue. So kick back and relax, this is a truly unique time in your life and you should enjoy the feeling of just being engaged!
4.) But feel free to fantasize. However, we know that wedding planning is also part of the fun, so by all means collect inspiration! Invite your girlfriends over for a night of drinking wine while flipping through bridal magazines. Stay up late with your fiancé laughing about the idea of the two of you using a penguin as your ring bearer. Have fun with it!
5.) Throw a party! Not an engagement party (that takes planning and comes later), just a celebratory “We’re engaged!” party. Invite everyone over for a backyard BBQ or have everyone to get dressed up and meet you at your favorite restaurant. Be prepared to show off your ring and tell the proposal story over and over again (trust us, at this point, it just gets better every time). And once again, congratulations!

Before the wedding there is the bridal shower. The task of throwing a bridal shower can stress a lot of people out, and when it’s a surprise party the stress can be even greater. However, we’re some of the millions of people out there that believe making the bridal shower a surprise bridal shower is what takes it to the next level. So we’ve got a few tips to help you pull it off with ease:
1.) Choose your date with care. Choosing the date is probably the most important part of this process, especially with all the extra work the bride will be doing in relation to her upcoming wedding. If she thought she was busy before, she’s definitely going to be busy now, so make sure you pick a date that she will absolutely be able to stick to.
A great way to ensure she’s coming is to make the party for someone else, then give her a small role. She has to bring cookies or something. Just that small commitment will usually be enough to make sure she comes no matter what. Plus, then if she catches wind of the “party”, she’ll still think it’s for a friend and your cover won’t be completely blown.
2.) Don’t forget about the groom! No matter how well you think you may know the bride, the groom is the one who is going to spend the rest of his life with her, so he probably knows her pretty well too. Keeping him in the loop will not only give you an inside edge into what she’s thinking during this crazed time, but will also help the groom bond a little bit with all of the bride’s favorite people.
3.) Plan to have guests there with plenty of time to spare. If you’re going to plan a surprise party, the guest of honor obviously needs to be the last one to arrive. Tell your guests at least an hour (maybe even two if you still need help with setting up and decorations) to ensure everyone will be there with plenty of time to spare. Besides, getting to see the look on her face when she realizes the party is for her is the highlight of the night, and who would want to miss that?
4.) Make it all about her. If she’s obsessed with everything French, make it a Parisian themed party. If she every Disney movie ever made, have the games revolve around this love of Disney movies. No matter what you do, make it something that she will absolutely love.
5.) Plan to keep it short but allow it to continue. Plan for a short party and then if she still has time it can be extended to include certain events. Don’t automatically expect her to be able to stay for six hours after she was just surprised with the idea 30 minutes ago. And if there is to be drinking involved, make sure she has a way to get home safe (insert fiancé’s name here).

When it comes to wedding planning, everyone wants their own wedding to be entirely unique. You want people to think to themselves, “Aww, isn’t that cute! Oh man I wish we would’ve thought of that for our wedding!”
But with the birth of social media (Pinterest, specifically), it’s become pretty difficult to come up an idea entirely your own. However, while many of these ideas listed below are not entirely new, what you do with them can create a one-of-a-kind experience.
1.) Make your own photo booth. Photo booths have become increasingly more popular in the last few years, and many couples are bucking the trend, but we think you should give it a second thought. While there are definitely high priced options available (actual photo booths that you plug in and receive tiny slides of your photos), you can easily make your own. Simply grab some props (crazy hats, mustaches and giant drinking glasses) and something to frame it (a window without glass) and let your guests line up and take photos of each other. Watching them interact with each other and all the props also makes for a great addition to your wedding video.
2.) Unique guestbooks. Everyone has a guestbook at their wedding, but this is a great opportunity to really get creative! Instead of just having them sign a book, have them leave their thumbprint on a thumbprint tree. Have them add their favorite “recipe for happiness” and place it in a recipe box. The options are endless!
3.) Interesting place cards. Place cards are another way to add a unique twist to your wedding. By no means do you have to use actual place cards; you can use playing cards, keys, clothespins, or even make your own. I’ve seen a couple that laminated their guests seat information on dried leaves for their fall wedding. So beautiful!
4.) Expand your venue. Just because you have a specific site for the ceremony and reception does not mean you have to limit yourself to only decorating these areas. Decorating the place where you get ready makes for fantastic photos and videos. You won’t have to worry about taking pictures in a boring and nondescript hotel bathroom. No need to go overboard, just a few flowers, balloons or signs that match the theme of your wedding. And speaking of signs…
5.) Make some signs. Signs are a great way to put your own personal touch on your big day. Of course everyone knows who you and your soon-to-be spouse are, but why not add some fun signs? It’s a great (and inexpensive) way to bring your entire theme together. Plus, homemade signs create some of the best keepsakes around. You’ll be able to hang it in your bedroom for years to come.

For many of us, the thought of getting married is also accompanied by the excitement of going on the honeymoon; a small amount of time that we get to spend with our new spouse without a care in the world. Of course that’s how it’s supposed to be, but if you hastily plan your honeymoon you could end up with some regrets upon arrival back home.
So we’ve got a few tips for you that should make your trip the most memorable (in a good way) honeymoon you could’ve ever planned.
1.) Go somewhere new. Relationship experts all agree that new experiences strengthen relationships. It doesn’t have to be an extravagant trip, but make sure there are at least a few new components of the trip. Even if you head off to your family’s cabin that you know better than the back of your hand, go off hiking to a new location or try your luck at fly-fishing for the first time.
2.) Hire a local photographer. This may seem completely random, but when will you ever have the chance to have professional picture taken of the two of you in Rome? Or Maui? Or Paris? A session would only take 30-60 minutes, and it would be an amazing way to capture the memory of your trip.
3.) Spread the word! Don’t hold back that the two of you are on your honeymoon. Many businesses will give you perks based on the fact that you are newlyweds. Hotels will comp you a better room, airlines will bump you up to first class and restaurants will give you dessert, on the house. Not always, of course, but you’d be surprised!
4.) Be prepared from day one. The fastest way to ruin your honeymoon is to get sunburned on the first day. Just go ahead and say goodbye to lounging by the beach and…you know…that other thing couples spend all day and night doing on their honeymoon. Wear the wrong shoes and you’ll be stuck with blisters all weekend long. So lather on sunscreen, wear the right shoes and look forward to enjoying your entire honeymoon.
5.) Let friends and family help. Many couples now list a “honeymoon fund” as part of the gift registry for their wedding. And for good reason too: guests can donate cash to your travel fund, or they can purchase things that you will be able to use on the trip, like scuba diving lessons or a historic tour of the location you’re headed to. Plus, this also allows them to be a part of your honeymoon without them actually being there. You’ll be thanking Uncle Phil for those surf lessons the entire time you’re out there, allowing him to be part of your memory without actually sneaking his way into your suitcase.
